Tonight WZBC, Boston College’s student-run radio station, celebrates 40 years of independent, compelling programming. A bastion of the weird, the unusual, and the ‘underground’ in a sea of Clear Channel-sponsored mediocrity, WZBC is a permenant fixture in Boston’s musical community. While other revenue-seeking universities around the country have sold off their bandwith, WZBC (along with MIT’s WMBR) have persevered, carving out a sacred space of DJ-driven musical goodness

Celebrate WZBC’s long life and independent spirit TONIGHT at Great Scott in Allston, where singer-songwriter-shredder MARNIE STERN spins her off-kilter mathy rhythms into mesmerizing pop dreams. Joining her are Northampton darlings SPEEDY ORTIZ, who conjure 90’s ‘college rock’ ghosts, mix in some occult imagery, churn it a blender of emotion and pour out a thick shake of grunged out angst anthems. NYC garage pop bubblers BOYTOY round out this night of delectable reverb-crunchy sonic candy. So come down and celebrate the continued life of independent media in an age of soulless corporate-sponsored culture, and feel reassured that you can still turn the dial to 90.3fm and find actual music, freely selected by a real (unpaid) person, uninterrupted by commercials. May The Z live on for another 40 years!
