Twink — Dust Bunny

Toy Piano Rocks (and Rolls)

by

In case if anyone ever wondered what would’ve happened had the folks behind Rockabye Baby series decided to switch from doing covers to writing original material, I’m giving you the answer — Twink!

Self-described “toy piano music band” of one Mike Langlie has been around since the early 2000s and the formula stays the same — take a pinch of Disney soundtracks, add electronics and put some beats on top. It may sound very simple on paper, but the endless amount of textures and moods that Mike comes up with keeps it from being stale, as evident on the project’s latest LP, Dust Bunny.

The whole record plays out like an unreleased soundtrack to one of Adult Swim’s shows — from sliced and diced hip-hop beats and chimes of “Emberglow” to toys-gone-mad playfulness of tracks like “Sparklemuffin” and “Whale Speck,” it all seems to beg for a pairing with a cartoon. For all its quirkiness, however, there’s also a slightly dark undertow to it all — from Kate O’Hara’s excellent artwork and down to notes that point out that the record was born during long New England winters.

Even with that hint of darkness, “Dust Bunny” is a kind of record that could be enjoyed by both kids and adults alike — a rare treat and a great addition to a back catalog chock-full of equally whimsical records.
