THIS WEEKEND: Punk Rock Aerobics @ Once Somerville

by

Looking for a new way to work out this year? Skank your angst away at Punk Rock Aerobics’ first class of 2017 on Saturday, Dec. 14 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Once Somerville. Music will be provided by DJ Sit and Spin. Brunch will be offered by Cuisine en Locale with a full bar, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“If you wanna stop and get a bloody mary, you can stop and go upstairs,” said Punk Rock Aerobics co-founder and instructor, Hilken Mancini.

The class will benefit Girls Rock Campaign Boston, which Mancini co-founded with Nora Allen-Wiles in 2010 after meeting at the Rock ‘n Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, Oregon. GRCB “empowers girls to believe in themselves by providing a supportive community that fosters self-expression, confidence, and collaboration through musical education and performance,” according to its website. Attendees can donate $10 or more at the door or reserve a spot here.

Punk Rock Aerobics was founded by Hilken and Maura Jasper in 2000. The first classes were held at the Middle East in Boston and eventually in New York City at CBGB and Club Lux in Brooklyn. The class invited participants to skank, pogo and mosh to classic punk music or live rock bands. The atmosphere has always been wild and rebellious, like going to a show on a Friday night.

“It’s supposed to be like a party,” Mancini said.

She and Melanie Bernier will be leading the class, which includes cardio and strength training. Attendees are encouraged to bring a mat.
“We used to use bricks for weights…  now we just have Melanie lead strength training on a mat, so we don’t have to lug bricks around,” Mancini said.
