“The pressure. The pounding. The terror.”

When Dan Shea decided to start a monthly night to present the growing scene of electronic music which exists at the intersection between harsh noise, abstract sound experiments, and various forms of electronic dance music, he couldn’t have picked a better name than Scanners. Cronenberg’s film is a harrowing piece of “future shock” in which super-powered telekinetics engage in grisly psychic warfare, just the sort of apocalyptic vision that might be evoked by music like Mincemeat Or Tenspeed. As the original trailer warns, Scanners can “conquer your will and manipulate your body like a toy.” Sounds pretty close to the goal of a DJ, eh?

Speaking of DJ’s, I should take this opportunity to introduce myself as Scanners’ resident selector DJ Won’t. I’ve also been co-promoting this monthly night with Boston Hassle (through Open Loop) as it has bounced around various locations in the city over the last year and a half. We’re very happy to announce that Scanners will be invading Club Bohemia (the basement of the Cantab Lounge in Central Square) on the first Thursday of every month. We’re going to kick off this new program on August 1st in a massive way with special guest Container! Ren is an old friend of the Scanners crew and his music is, appropriately enough, the auditory equivalent of HeadExplode.gif. I’ll be providing additional stimulation for your body & mind with dark & dirty cuts of techno, house, industrial, post-punk, & beyond!

I’m also excited to announce that one Scanners per month hasn’t been enough so we’ve been booking “Re-Scan” parties as the opportunities arise.
