SQUANTO (Rochester NY) MATT SAMOLIS, HARMOOS @ 119 GALLERY (Lowell)

by

In case you didn’t know there’s an old mill town north of here that has been staunchly pro-arts for many years. In addition to Lowell’s summer music/arts festival, they host numerous galleries including Fort Point refugee, 119 Gallery, a progressive arts and electronic media organization. Tonight they present two folk-informed acts with improvisational flute between. First up is Boston 3-piece dream rockers HARMOOS, whose lo-fi explorations plumb honest ideals over varied landscapes, almost recalling an edgy Jonathan Richman in style. MATT SAMOLIS has collaborated on flute with numerous musicians in the microtonal scene around Boston and will perform some of his solo improvisational work tonight. Lastly, SQUANTO, direct from Ben Lovell’s bedroom in Rochester NY, presents layered orchestral compositions that shift, ebb and build hypnotically, blending folk instrumentation with natural recordings and synth, a perfect coda for a folk-inspired experimental night of music in Lowell.
