It’s time to get out and hang. Even the sun is hanging out these days. Get out and hang with the sun, on your way down Mass Ave. to Central Square, to hang at Out of the Blue Too. There is a multitude of reasons to chill here in this exquisitely located multi-use store/gallery/venue, but for one thing, it’s an old Blockbuster. Just picture yourself in the Blockbuster you went to as a youngster, physically chillin’ in the void that video rental stores have left in our hearts. I mean, anyone else miss it? Netflix is cool and all, but I’m about getting OUT. Especially when the word APRIL is all over this here monthly schmatte. Now picture said void filled to the brim with vibrant art and just all kinds of good vibes. Well, that is just what this new gallery, formerly Out of the Blue on Prospect Street around the corner, is filling their space with.
Since launching their new location in the fall of 2014 the OOTBT crew has been jumping through an unknown number of hoops, representing the interests of their community and neighboring communities, to establish a legitimate venue for art events of all kinds. So far they are doing great things to accommodate the wide breadth of daily and nightly activities our plentiful music, art, and film communities keep busy with. You can see and procure rad art. You can acquire various handmade artifacts, from the crucial to the peripheral. You can participate in open mics, board games, and other regular gatherings. You can see a dope show at the hands of grassroots promoters and organizers, featuring artists and musicians who represent the real, hard-working and forward-thinking scene Boston has every right to but doesn’t necessarily boast. You can take in a film screening or art show and rub elbows with relevant local, national, and international freaks.
You see, because OOTBT is doing what any good community space should: providing an accessible place for its city’s and region’s artists and appreciators to run a darn muck (a safe, welcoming muck) with their various cross-medium projects and push their creative boundaries further than conventional venues allow! What a mouthful. To sum it all up, especially if any of this is causing your eyebrow to raise, just allow me to answer any and all question you might have with one answer: Yes, you could hang here. —Sam Potrykus
