OUT OF THE PAST(LISTEN TO): feedtime

by

Out of the past, born of the early 80s, comes feedtime. feedtime have reunited for a brief tour, very sadly not coming to Boston, timed in conjunction with the reissuing of their first 4 LPs(under the title THE ABERRANT YEARS) by none other than SUB POP. Makes sense that SUB POP is doing the reissues, as many of the labels early stars must have been feedtime fans. These guys were/are a loud and brutal beast of a trio based out of Sydney who put out records on now historic labels such as ROUGH TRADE and AMPHETAMINE REPTILE. Always willing to nearly obliterate their underlying hooks and pop sensibilities with screech and scrawl, but only nearly, as, if you are listening, it is always there if you really want it. Grooves appear, created by rumbling bass and filthy slide guitar. And they may be nasty, but they will move you. Nasty proto-punk meets post-punk sounds are what is conjured across their records, reaching its apex(for my shitpop loving ears) on SUCTION their swan song, where hooks and songcraft most often jut forth from the band’s bubbling, hissing miasma. Influential in Australia in a way that an American who never heard of this band until long after they were done can’t totally get. Australia’s Melvins, or something like that? Yeah probably. Sludge punk, or even better avant pub rock as I have heard them described. Blast your ears with one of the 80s best at providing such blasting. Wishing again they were coming to Boston…
