OPENSOUND + NON-EVENT: THE SCHEMATICS, MATT SAMOLIS / CAROLINE PARK (SAMOLIS / PARK DUO), VIC RAWLINGS, DAVID GROSS @ THIRD LIFE STUDIO

by

Music is a language and when it is composed, the language is recorded with expression. Musicians read a crescendo and they gradually play louder. They read a half note rest and they cease playing for two beats in the measure. But what if music was solely based off those crescendos, rests, and various dynamic cues? Language without words… Pure texture…

OPENSOUND and NON-EVENT, two of the most experimental concert series’ in the Boston Area, are redefining aural communication tonight at the THIRD LIFE STUDIO in Union Square, Somerville.

Straight outta Stockholm, THE SCHEMATICS continuously deconstruct and rebuild their repertoire, and their expertise in improvisation allows them to reinterpret their own history without missing a chapter. Flautist MATT SAMOLIS and electronic music composer CAROLINE PARK join forces to form the Samolis/Park Duo. VIC RAWLINGS communicates with his cello and cracked electronics in order to exhibit the harsher elements between the layered textures he creates. DAVID GROSS approaches the saxophone as a found sound rather than a traditional instrument, resulting in the use of sustained microtones and other unconventional techniques during his performances.

Our lips are embouchures and our tongues click with accents. What music are you speaking tonight?
