Tonight OKKERVIL RIVER invade the SINCLAIR. The Austin TX group has been cranking out unforgettable songs and even more memorable choruses since 1998 with no signs of letting up. From the brooding isolationist hit album BLACK SHEEP BOY to working with the legendary king of psych ROKY ERICKSON, Okkervil River is touring on their newest effort THE SILVER GYMNASIUM (ATO). Like many of their others, this is a concept album that delves into the glory that was the 1980’s. There are tons of pop culture references that illustrated the band’s childhood and the sincerity and honesty of those times shine through in some truly great songs. The band pumps out tunes that are as tight and well constructed as ever.
Traveling with Okkervil River are fellow Austin rockers HUNDRED VISIONS. Hundred Visions bring a brand of rock that gets you moving. These guys blend airy psych from the desert, a sense of glam rock, and a twang of rockabilly. Or as they put it themselves, “Psych Taco Rock”. Unlike most bands that use elements of psych, these songs don’t meander. They drive forward with a groove that swoons. They often show their Texas roots with swingin’ country rock riffs that are full of energy. The amount of intensity on the recorded tracks is impressive enough so the live gig tonight is sure to be be a blistering affair.
