NOVEMBER COMPASS: Moment of Clarity

by

White girls in culturally-appropriative headgear, unconscionable ticket fees, frat bros hyped up on acid punching each other in the pit. The phrase “music festival,” brings plenty of cringe-worthy images to mind—all far, far removed from anything resembling musical enjoyment.

In recent years, the modern music festival has morphed into a fully commodified experience. The stages are named for drink brands. “Festival wear” has become an entire industry and Urban Outfitters stocks a “Coachella mini dress.”

While this corporate BS is enough to make most in the scene swear off festivals altogether, still the concept of the festival is undeniably attractive; I can think of few ways I’d rather spend a Saturday afternoon than seeing good live music and drinking beer surrounded by fellow feelers.

We at the Boston Hassle have been doing this crazy thing called Hasslefest for 9 years. It’s wild. Wild in sound as it is in logistics. For $25 (which is less than 1/3 the cost of a one-day pass to Boston Calling) on November 10 & 11 this month, you can see over 20 bands play at Once Somerville. No festibros. No #festivalfashion. Just good music. We promise.
