With the weekend underway and the last month of summer already in progress, you gotta start taking advantage of the plentiful array of punk rock-related activities our city has to offer before the weather and other responsibilities threaten to turn you square again. A good place to start: this awesome show at the Democracy Center in Cambridge TONIGHT! Headlining this evening’s sweet bill will be MARIETTA, who bring with them a refined and urgent batch of Pennsylvania-bred, bouncy emo numbers. There is a smoothness to the vocal delivery and to the execution of their complex guitar figures that is particularly noticeable in a genre which often trades in torn vocal chords and other tools (tropes?) of the punk rock aesthetic. That’s not to say that MARIETTA is all execution and no emotion: you will surely get your chance to sing however badly or beautifully you want during some well-placed moments of gang-vocal glory throughout their set.
Bringing some local noise from the Lowell scene will be alt-country tinged rockers KAL MARKS. Dark, swampy and subtle rock tunes that worm their way straight into your mind and soul through deliberate, efficient gestures.
Boston’s dream-pop, hard-gazing punks BURGLARY YEARS (mems. lovechild) are set to perform tonight as well. Fuzzy, layered slow-burners that move between soft-spoken moments and cinematic climaxes with delicately unfolding melodies.
Trekking up from South Carolina are BIG AWESOME, who know their way around some midwestern-emo and focus on raspy vocals with post-rock tendencies. On hand to put some garage-rock spins on the sound of the East Coast’s recent punk and emo resurgence will be BRIGHTSIDE. Rounding out the lineup is Tennessee’s upbeat, poppy math-rock four-piece LIONS, who will provide plenty of energy to help get this show going in the right direction.
The Democracy Center is where it’s all going down, which means you should make your way out to Cambridge TONIGHT to make your Saturday complete!
