Beijing-Montreal brothers Simon and Josh Frank are aptly named Hot & Cold. On the surface this fraternal duo play deceptively simple minimal synth post-punk. But behind those vaguely catchy hooks and reserved, understated vocal, there is a backbone of driving motorik drums supporting a vicious, engrossing attack of noise synth rhythms that leave your ear drums raw and begging for more. ‘No Dreams Tonight,’ the star track off their latest CS, Night People’s ‘Introduction/Conclusion’ (actually a 2009 reissue) encapsulates this compelling combo of intensity and restraint, like a rabid three headed Cerberus on a very short, tenuous leash. My advice: bump these tracks and unleash the beast.
