LISTEN TO: Drew Sayers & Tony Falco

by

Brooklyn-via-Boston-via-Connecticut tenor sax powerhouse Drew Sayers and uber-talented drummer Tony Falco have just given jazz heads seven tasty cuts of really nice, melodically lush, connected, soulful, and engaging improvisation on “Dancing With The Sun”, a bandcamp release straight outta the oven on May 3rd.
The strength of this set of improvisations comes not from some series of visceral sonic shocks or deep psychological probing, but rather from genuine listenability. The duo remain in telepathic lockstep throughout the release, clearly united by the goal of attaining rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic beauty. These tunes flutter, stutter, explore, implore, spread out, lament, beg, and reminisce BUT both players keep their statements tasteful and legible which makes for a very pleasant experience.
Style-wise, you won’t necessarily be beaming into any new astral planes here. Sayers clearly enjoys his Coltrane, blues, and late 60s tenors and both of them stay away from any cathartic outbursts that one might expect (if you’re reading this site anyway). That said, they navigate amazingly within these boundaries. Pop over to the bandcamp site and check out this excellent duo, then toss them $5!
