L’ENFANT (The Child), which earned the Dardennes the Palme d’Or at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival for Best Film, follows Bruno and Sonia, a young couple living hand-to-mouth, off her government benefits and the thefts committed by his gang. Unbeknownst to Sonia, Bruno arranges for their newborn baby to be illegally adopted to make some quick money. Evocative, astute, subtle, and suspenseful.
