2013 Year Enders

I Hate ‘Best Of’ Lists by Derek Desharnais

DEREK DESHARNAIS plays guitar and sings in SNEEZE, and is the drummer of MASK OUT. He was previously in the band L’ANTIETAM, He operates and lives in Allston, and runs MIDNIGHT WEREWOLF RECORDS.

So I have been thinking a lot about this and honestly, I have come to the conclusion that I hate best of lists. I am not sure if I even remember what happened in the first six months of this year. I feel like if it came out and I took the time to listen to it, then I am going to love it and I respect them greatly for it. It is extremely hard to get something physical out now a days.

A few things stand out but I am more excited for the future. Grass is Green, Speedy Ortiz, Sneeze all have great albums scheduled to be released in the first quarter of 2014.

I am extremely impressed with the progress these bands have made in 2013

(in no particular order and yes I definitely forgot some gems here)
Ladybones, Roomrunner, Young Adults, Poverty Hollow, Settler, Solids, Culture Abuse, Bedroom Eyes, Vending Machetes, Raw Blow, Cloakroom, California X, Donovan Wolfington, Motel Mattress, Rick Rude, Comma, Ramming Speed, Ovlov, Hoax
Things in Boston that have disappointed me was the lack of basement shows this year and the departure of Zach D and the end of Trach / Arvid Noe.

MWR had a wonderful year. We added a member (Chris Morrison) to our crew. We teamed up with a great design and artwork crew and put out some of the best records / tapes in my eyes. Sneeze, Kal Marks, Trach, Arvid Noe, Forn, Chandelier, and Flat Swamp. We even snagged up Big Mess. I am excited to have developed a close relationship with the wonderful Allston Pudding and of course Boston Hassle and all the other DIY zines / blogs that have helped us out.

I can’t wait to see what 2014 brings.
