Tonight has two walls: wall of dream and wall of psych. Tobacco’s unmistakable thick waves of psychedelic synth corrode under the bizarre visuals show he’s known for. Before I saw it, I didn’t know ET and pterodactyls were in that sort of movie – you’ll have to see it to believe it.

Tobacco has matured over his lon series of releases, but he’s still very aware of his roots. Since 2010’s solo Maniac Meat, he tended in an aggressive departure from not only his warbly synths and 256-bit fuzzy caterpillars, but also his halcyon Black Moth Super Rainbow punchy drug dreams. His newest newest release, Ultima II Massage (2014, Ghostly International), is an attempt to reconcile his past: we have both his ravaging Maniac taken a step further with blown out kits and guit and scarring vox, yet other tracks hearken to his dusty roots and BMSR. He attempts to smooth it together in a pop-laden funk in what’s his most ambitious release yet – everything good is on the table tonight. And those pterodactyls are burned into my brain, I’m not kidding.
