Head out to The Sinclair tonight to see the cream of the Catchy Crop strut their stuff – these bands are gonna burrow into you like earwigs, take up residence in your brain, and keep your foot tapping for hours. The Torontonian crushers Fucked Up (Matador Records) approach hardcore with an original melodic sensibility which, when combined with their epic-like lyrics, creates a sound that is powerfully brutal yet still makes you smile. Then there’s PAWS (from Glasgow, on Fatcat Records), with fast-paced groovy garage that blends thumpin’ basslines and strange-chord guitar, and sounds like a summer bike-ride down the Appalachians – choppy, rocky, always pulling you forward. And Twin Peaks (Chicago, on Autumn Tone and Manic Static) rocks a sparkly, overdriven, crashy set that draws you in like some sort of rock’n’roll Charybdis, spins you around in its reverb-filled depths, and tosses you out beautifully dazed. Come out to support these stellar touring bands – you’re sure to go home with a killer song stuck in your head.
