Lordy lordy, it’s gonna get weird tonight! Come out to the Middle East Upstairs and check out a riotous show put on by League Podcast and filled with all flavors of crazy. Veteran Providence jammers Math The Band (on Anchor Brain Records) describe themselves as an “electro-punk spazz duo”, and that seems pretty accurate – they shred 8-bit synthesizers over lightning-fast drum-machine tracks and power-rock guitar, with energetic harmonies sung over playful xylophones. Then there’s the 19-piece brass band What Cheer? Brigade, also from Providence and also on Anchor Brain, whose members blend samba and swing, hip-hop and jazz, Bollywood and bossa-nova, to create a sound as diverse (and expansive) as a world-wide street band. Yale, Massachusetts bring the power-pop for the evening, mixing rough distorted guitar and big full bass – with the occasional gleeful horn track in the background. And if the show weren’t strange enough already, Boston freakers Funeral Cone will be there to demolish with snappy drum beats, electronic organ, and satisfying squeals. Plus: giveaways from Will and Jaden Smith’s new movie!? Get some weird in your pop and come support these local eccentrics!
