It’s a homegrown-acoustic night at Out of the Blue Gallery near Central Square, so head on over to listen to some mellow tunes and view some great local artwork. Missing Twin, aka Samantha Martasian, has that slight flicker in her smooth voice that makes lines like “I’m afraid I’ll turn into my dad” resonate all the more eerily. Vegan Arcade takes a page from skate punk, blending faster beats and syncopated strumming patterns with open-chords. Fans of Laura Stevenson & The Cans will dig Bookends; their ukelele-over-guitar layout plays nicely off the whimsy and fear of their lyrics (“Can’t sleep, there’s a monster in my bed…it drank my whiskey, swallowed my best friend.”). And then there’s Kismet – featuring Jon Kohen of post-rock zingers Crashing Cars – with searing vocal harmonies that gain their strength from their delicate delivery, and deep cello and upright bass lines to complement Kohen’s energetic riffs. Northampton’s Two Tree brings a refreshing mix of swampy Southern wailers and stirring harmonic tearjerkers, often within the same song. Chris O’Grady asks the honest questions, and his uncomplicated song structures mirrors the frankness of his lyrics perfectly. And Monkeybread‘s funk will round the ticket out with swooning guitar bends and snappy drum fills. If you’re looking for a calm soothing respite form a hectic week, this gallery show may do you well.
