For a good 15 years now, Baltimore-via-San Francisco duo MATMOS have been carving out a a singular space in the realm of downtempo electronics, with a focus on intricate percussive rhythms, the dialogue between acoustic and electronic instrumentation and the incorporation of novel and unconventional instruments and sounds. Their back discography is veritable treasure trove of soothing, stimulating compositions, a view into a strand of electronic music that, in retrospect, in many ways defined the previous decade. But Matmos are looking forward, and with a new album The Marriage of True Minds (Thrill Jockey) and the live collaboration of fellow Baltimore rhythm freaks HORSELORDS for a sound that leans towards psychedelic eastern tribal grooves. In addition to acting as Matmos’ backing band, Horselords will be opening with those expansive garage kraut vibes, like a funky invasive parasite subtly undermining your nervous system, compelling you to dance along like some wasted acid casualty. So come to the new Sinclair in Harvard Square tonight and expand your mind a lil.
