GO TO: (12/31) FIRST NIGHT – EXPERIMENTAL SPACES @ HYNES CONVENTION CENTER

by

If you still don’t have plans for New Years Eve, you might want to consider checking out First Night at the Hynes Convention Center. One $18 button grants you access to a wide variety of cutting-edge performances in one place. It’s really the only place you’ll see noise-freaks and psych-onauts interacting with anime heads, steampunks, and even normals! Everything wraps up by 11pm so you’ll have time to walk to Copley Square for the countdown or dash to that wild party you heard about. This is my personal list of First Night main attractions, all of which wil be taking place at the Hynes Convention Center (900 Boylston St).

Xenon Retina
If you were at the Raw Meet Fest at Massart, Homegrown IV at the Elks, or any live performance by LSDV, you’ve been exposed to the video work of Patrick Chaney and Joe Mygan. Xenon Retina is an immersive and interactive installation they will be staging as a performance space within the convention room in collaboration with Patrick O’Neil and Nick Rocco. The psychedelic, glitched-out environment should be the perfect setting for live performances by Eat Cloud, Double Awake, Little Emperor, and Spice Raq.
7:00pm – 11:00pm
Room 309

Intransitive Recordings Showcase
Howard Stelzer has been involved in Boston-area experimental scene for well over a decade, booking shows and releasing music under the Intransitive label. This is not his first time ringing in the New Year at the convention center but it looks to be the best to date. Stelzer will open the show with a solo set and close it out by performing in a duo with Jason Talbot, a longtime collaborator. They will be joined by rise set twilight, Jack Dice, and Peter Whincop. Nathan Trites will be spinning hot tracks and posting dog pics on tumblr between performances.
7:00pm – 11:00pm
Room 313

Animal Hospital Ensemble with Major Stars and DJ Jesse Kaminsky
Animal Hospital Ensemble is over 2 dozen of Boston’s finest musicians performing pieces originally written by Kevin Micka for his Animal Hospital solo project. It really is stunning to see these songs (and performers) outside of their usual context and to be literally surrounded by so many guitars. Their set is at 9pm so don’t miss out. Major Stars will be closing it out with their signature blend of heavy cream pysch and Jesse Kaminsky will be DJ’ing throughout the night. Dan McCarthy is commemorating the performance with a limited edition print which you can purchase at the show.
7:30pm – 11:00pm
Room 302
