You never know what you’re going to get at an OOIOO show. Just like you never know what you’re going to get with an OOIOO song — put their 17-year (o)oeurve on shuffle, and you might feel like you’re wandering through a sonic triptych of the 12 Labours of Neopsychedelic-Hercules. Their songs tramp through guitar squalls, shifting percussion, and very creative vocal outbursts, but they all have an undeniable generosity of spirit that makes them at least as fun as they are heady. This time around there will probably be a lot of gamelan, a metallic percussion instrument that has been a staple of Indonesian music since at least the 8th century, and that lends an airy playfulness to OOIOO’s mighty-morphin’ sound. Black Pus, the solo project of Lightning Bolt drummer Brian Chippendale, makes scratchy, desparate noise-rock that will get you jumping around. TONIGHT at The Red Room @ Cafe 939, don’t miss it!
