MY GAY BANJO, SISTER MARY, EVAN GREER, CALLIOPE OF THE FUTURE @ FIREHOUSE (WORCESTER)

by

The Firehouse in Worcester has been putting on great all-ages monthly folk shows all summer, and this offering is one of the best. You’ve got My Gay Banjo, who play exactly what it says on the tin — heartfelt queer country-western songs, featuring campfire harmonies, wit, and lots of banjo-picking. Psych-bluegrass troubador Mary T.S. Brooks, aka Sister Mary, edges into something new thanks to her unique, arrestingly quavery voice, which shimmers above her banjo riffs and foot stomps like a mirage in the desert. Evan Greer‘s experiences as a genderqueer activist, community organizer, parent, and overall radical person inform her upbeat acoustic protest tunes, which you’ll be singing along to by the second chorus. Calliope of the Future have traveled all the way from Colorado to play whaling dirges and roadside stompers that will transport you to all kinds of places that seem just out of reach. As if that weren’t enough, there’s also a drag MC performance and a potlucky atmosphere. Open your heart and your picnic basket, kick back and soak it all up at the Firehouse tonight!
