Chaos clashes with efficiency on the newest 12” from outré techno-explorers Demdike Stare. For the third volume in their Testpressings series, Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty offer the listener two bonafide bangers, issued by Modern Love. “Eulogy” occupies the A-Side with an enduring, motorik bass rhythm over a steady, hypnotic kick. Cosmic flourishes encircle the track’s metallic core, with pinging synths and starstruck ambience lending the track the space and sensuality it needs to fully seduce the listener. On the flip, the horror is real – “Dysology” ranks among Demdike’s most terrifyingly perfect arrangements to date. Droning voices introduce the track, with windswept textures washing over, promising nothing but a punishing build. Four minutes in, and the pair deliver a climactic, triumphant piece of blown-out brutality, a beat that satisfies the listener more than even the headiest tracks in their back catalog. Elementals was a master-class on slow, “Nuance”-d tension; Triptych was a sprawling experiment in archaic vinyl rhythm rehabilitation; but “Dysology” exposes a new, aggresive dimension, a place where Demdike’s powers have only been growing.
