October 2014 Guide to FREE after 4 Wednesdays @Museum of Fine Art (Fenway)

Every single Wednesday after 4pm the Museum of Fine Arts lets all us penniless paupers inside for FREE and there just so happens to be some sick talks, tours and happenings coinciding each week.

Here’s what’s going on Wednesdays this October at the MFA….


\ Wednesday, 10/8 //

6-7pm CURATOR TALK on SHINIQUE SMITH: BRIGHT MATTER @Sharf Visitor Center. Get a jolt to your retinas with a truly exuberant show of Smith’s paintings, sculptures and large-scale installations. Jen Mergel, Beal Senior Curator of Contemporary Art will be walkin’ and talkin’ us through this explosive expression.

5:30-8:30pm ARTIST TOOLBOX CART: Furniture Design @Gallery 134 is a chance to better understand the art of furniture design by learning about and handling the tools and materials used to create beautiful, functional furnishings.

6/6:30/7:15pm TALK: The Trojan War on a Greek Vase @Gallery 215A Let a one of the many informed members of staff examine this epic vase on exhibit.

6-9pm Drawing in the Galleries If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at sketching, EVERY WEEK the MFA is providing you with the tools, the space, a subject and even an instructor to give it a shot!  Live (clothed) models or a museum object will be provided as your subject.  This is open to amateurs and pros alike.  Seriously, you’ve got nothing to lose here! // Every Wednesday

6:15-7:15pm GALLERY TOUR: Highlights of the Museum Collections Head to the Sharf Visitor Center and take an hourlong walkthrough of the MFA’s favorites works. // Every Wednesday

5:30-8:30pm ARTIST TOOLBOX CART: Furniture Design @Gallery 134  is a chance to better understand the art of furniture design by learning about and handling the tools and materials used to create beautiful, functional furnishings.

6-7pm TALK: Conservation of Ancient Greek Vases and Sculpture @Sharf Visitor Center.  The MFA is looking to show off their newly-renovated ancient Greek galleries while providing some free insight on how these old-as-dirt works of art are kept intact.

6/6:30/7:15pm TALK: Pedro Reyes: Transforming Guns into Musical Art @Gallery 259 A member of staff in-the-know will show you the facts behind this work by Pedro Reyes.

 


\ Wednesday, 10/22 //

5:30-8:30pm ARTIST TOOLBOX CART: Silver @Gallery 134 Learn all about the tools and techniques used in the step-by-step process of creating some of the museum’s finest silver works of art.

6-7pm TALK: The Artist in his Studio @Sharf Visitor Center Joshua O’Driscoll (Grad student/Guest lecturer) discussing the history of artistic creation as a common subject in series of paintings he’s pulled from the museum. The talk will also cover the artist’s ever-changing role in society.  Interesting stuff…join the conversation.

6/6:30/7:15pm TALK: Pure Souls: The Jain Path to Perfection @Gallery 132 As part of the Diwali: Festival of Lights celebration find out more about the history and meaning behind this ancient work of art.

7-8:30pm LECTURE: MAKE/SPEAK @Remis Auditorium (MFA) 7 jacks of various trades share their process from mind to matter. Fields range from graphic novels to bowmaking to performance art in the third of the MAKE/SPEAK series events focusing on contemporary craft. The lecture is FREE with a suggested donation of $25…take our suggestion and donate whatever you can, IF you can, and learn something new. Do a round @the MFA before hitting the lecture (scan our Ongoing section) to see what’s on display as it’s free after 4 today!
