LISTEN TO: DISAPPEARS

by

Chicago group comes to us with a second record, GUIDER(LUX came out last year), on KRANKY. Vocalist Brian Case often takes an almost hardcore style approach to his vocals, eschewing melody for jagged rhythmic word placement, while the band plays their droning garage rock behind him. “Not Romantic” is loud quiet loud primal stomp that just gives way to loud, chugging guitar crescendo. “New Fast” finds Case chanting his vocals over a constantly moving bass pattern and never changing drum beat. Distorted reverb heavy guitar shards dot the landscape giving way to wall of sound-ness for a wordless chorus of sorts. Strangely at times, mostly on “”Revisiting”(with its awesome bass lines), the vocals remind me much of Baltimore’s PONYTAIL. A marriage of shoegaze and krautrock moves that does a pretty decent job of keeping the marriage happy.
