This one snuck up on us. Montrealien Alex Zhang Hungtai aka DIRTY BEACHES is playing down in the Fenway at CHURCH. Channeling a burnt out rockabilly vibe mixed with a heavy dose of Suicide, Dirty Beaches has a sharp, indelible sound equal parts ripping soul-fired groove and pensive downer drone. His new double album Drifters / Love is the Devil (Zoo Music) sees Hungtai develop a deeper, personal songwriting style, so expect new things from this focused, charismatic performer. With him is Los Angeles’ SISU, a dreamy, synth-powered group with a rounded poppy gaze. DJ CARBO starts things off with some super-charged club sounds (or something). An unusual mix perhaps, but one that just may surprise you.
