Allow me to take a small break from writing about grimy garage punk to let you know about a pretty awesome and affordable fundraiser that is near and dear to this ol’ state of Massachusetts. Not everyone is psyched about Thanksgiving, but regardless of your political views, hatred of your family, obsessive dietary restrictions, WHATEVER, you’ll most likely eat some form of a warm meal with some form of person/people you might care about, and hey that’s not a bad day. A lot of us are lucky enough to experience that every day, and unless you live under a rock you know that there are plenty of people out there who aren’t.
That’s where COMMUNITY SERVINGS comes in. The organization began in 1990 and was deeply involved with delivering nutritious meals to critically ill folks battling HIV/AIDS in Massachusetts. As Community Servings grew over the years, they expanded their reach to serve those battling any critical illness and they opened a new facility that houses an enormous industrial kitchen and space to teach nutritional education classes.
Every Thanksgiving, Community Servings hosts one of the most appealing fundraisers I can think of called PIE IN THE SKY. Here’s how it works. For a donation of $25, you BUY a pie and pick it up the day before Thanksgiving (there are many pickup locations all over Massachusetts). That $25 also buys a Community Servings client three nutritious meals a day for a week. All of the pies are made and donated by amazing local bakeries, and as a result nearly 100% of the funds raised by Pie in the Sky go to Community Servings.
LET ME SUM IT UP: YOU BUY PIE. YOU GET PIE. YOU EAT PIE. BECAUSE YOU BOUGHT PIE, A CRITICALLY ILL PERSON IN MASSACHUSETTS GETS A WEEK’S WORTH OF NUTRITIOUS MEALS DELIVERED TO THEIR HOUSE. WITH THIS, YOU CANNOT LOSE!
Here, listen to Fletcher C. Johnson, and THINK ABOUT HOW AWESOME PIE IN THE SKY IS!!!
