Yeah, bands are awesome — but there’s something so vivid and daring about instrumentalists who venture out on their own. Tonight, three lone rangers explore their own limits, armed only with their chosen instruments. Laptop artist Caroline Park creates soundscapes at once lush and minimal, like a field full of evocative snow-covered lumps. Beth McDonald totes her tuba around about a billion Boston-based music ensembles, but her solo work shows off all the surprisingly varied things she can do with it (have you ever heard a tuba emote? McDonald’s laughs, cries, and shouts). Pair that with Matt Samolis, who makes improvised flute music, and has used his performances and recordings to comment on the US budget sequester, the Hiroshima & Nagasaki atrocities, and “the role and nature of human memory.” See what they can do TONIGHT at the Aviary in JP!
