No, not the research college. Tonight at The Sinclair, Bowery Boston & Cambridge’s own DJ school, Mmmmaven , graciously brings us Jon Hopkins, top-dog glitch/techno/ambience from the UK. Having experience as a part of Coldplay and producing alongside Brian Eno, his solo act is absolutely anything but. Razor-sharp dirty dub pads are sliced by deep ducking and glitch beats, providing a singular sound known across the techno world. Bringing out more dance and two-step vibe on his recent release, Immunity (2013, Domino Records), Hopkins always comes back to start with piano interludes (straight out of Music for Airports, no less) and then builds them with dubby ambient drones into the next euphoric break. Come out to The Sinclair tonight for the closest thing you can get to dub-step this side of the Atlantic.
And supporting Mr. Hopkins is The Range, with some soulful midi-funk. Layers of smooth dance with a flair for RnB lo-fi vocals. Doesn’t make sense? Listen for yourself.
