If you haven’t been to a Krill show yet, now is a great time! These guys have always played as though they were trying to wrestle their favorite boulder up from the bottom of the ocean, but they’ve just come off a triumphant tour and are now, like athletes in peak condition, tossing that rock around like it’s nothing. Jonah is crooning and howling like a well-meaning wolf. Aaron is wrenching spiraly riffs out of the air. Ian is spinning his sticks. They’re switching in and out of time signatures and emotional states so seamlessly, you won’t realize your tears are making the dance floor all slippery. Can’t recommend it enough. Meanwhile, if you like crescendos, you’ll like Softspot, who are bringing a bunch over from Brooklyn. Tendril guitars and trembling cymbals slowly twine around the pillar of singer Sarah Kinlaw’s voice until they’ve grown a whole arbor of possibility. (They also make really great videos). Boston-based Couples Counseling, aka Virginia de las Pozas, takes sweet straightforward songs and blurs them with beats and effects, like a candy store through a kaleidoscope.
