If you’re into independent animation and curious about what kinds of strange and unique moving images people are cooking up on the other side of the globe, put down your shovel. The new Boston-based film initiative Crows & Sparrows is here to make things a lot easier for you.

Crows & Sparrows, whose focus is East and Southeast Asian cinema, presents a screening in collaboration with Balagan Films of new works by young Chinese artists that represent the breadth of innovative, creative ideas and techniques observable in contemporary animated film. The works draw inspiration from both the personal and the political, utilizing methods of collage, stop motion, ink drawings, computer algorithms, and more.

This is the second collaborative screening between Balagan and Crows & Sparrows, following last month’s “Recycled Cinema” program at the Brattle. Two of the filmmakers, Lei Lei and Chai Mi, will be present for Q&A. –Stefan Grabowski
