Well yesterday was quite a treat. Day 1 of BOSTON HASSLE FEST 5 went off without a hitch. The day was a veritable smorgasborg of scrumptious noise squealers and weirdo pop beaters. After a full day of sweet sonic chaos, you think we’d be satisfied – but nay! the show must continue.
Day 2 of Hassle Fest 5 kicks off this afternoon at the holy Cambridge Elks Lodge in Central Square. The second day will continue in the tradition of the first: 20+ performers playing back to back on two stages for a endless stream of outsider grooves. There’s not much down time, and if you want a cig/food/air break, you’ll have to forgo seeing some act. But fear not, there is enough to go around.
Yesterday’s lineup leaned heavily on distorted noise and ruthless, pummeling rhythms. Today will be similar, with plenty of reverb-soaked rock warriors like Bezoar, Johns and the like. As the evening progresses however, the sounds mutate into darker beast with fucked electronic wizards Black Dice, Nate Young (of Wolf Eyes), Profligate and the like. Their ominous pulsations are tempered by more pop and synth-oriented dabblers like Fat Creeps, Speedy Ortiz and Prince Rama. And let us not forget the Afterparty ($5 but free for fest attendees) at nearby Western Front, featuring yet more punk goodness.
There’s something for everyone at this true freak fest, so come out early (you might score some free pizza) and open your ears and eyes to the vast, psychedelic landscape that is contemporary rock. See you there.
