Time to put 2018 in the rear view as we stand on the precipice of what will hopefully be a better year ahead. As we gather and reflect, what better way to ring in these promising new days than with a groove induced haze of show at ONCE co-hosted by Boston Hassle and the “needs no introduction” Illegally Blind. Hailing from all the way across the Atlantic and straight from our hallucinated desert dreams is radically creative guitarsmith Mdou Moctar. With albums that jump from psychedelic pop to experimental improvisation and often include the sounds of the environments in which these sonic soundscapes are birthed, the Taureg six-string legend brings his Sarahan influences from the dunes of north Africa to Somerville for a rare appearance. Boston ex-pats and current Brooklyn residents Guerilla Toss contribute their ever evolving brand of disco, dance infused funk punk to make sure we remember that this IS a party and that ringing in a new 365 is cause for celebration. Also jumping in this rainbow ball pit are jazzy blues rockers Mr. Airplane Man and the wholly original “what did I just hear and why do I love it” noisy punk emulsions of Creative Healing. Let’s all bathe in this kaleidoscope of sonic diversity as we promise each other to go to the gym more.
