Gallery Talk on the Creative Process in Modern Japanese Printmaking @MFA

@Sharf Visitor Center (MFA) // 2-3pm // Free with admission

Allow assistant curator SARAH THOMPSON to walk and talk you through what happened when Japanese printmakers no longer had to create work for commercial publishing but got to explore the medium with only the limitations of their minds. Thompson’s knowledge is impressive and her legit enthusiasm is infectious.

The exhibit itself includes prints, preliminary drawings, woodblocks, and artists’ proofs to help guide the viewer through the process. The pièce de résistance has to be Yoshida Hiroshi’s set of six large prints titled Sailboats made in 1926, which all use the same woodblock but were printed using different colors schemes to depict the same scene throughout the day.

Whether you are already knowledgable on the process of printmaking or are the owner of a curious mind, this talk is an opportunity to get a closer look at an already fascinating exhibit. Learn about the shin hanga collaborative method vs the sosaku hanga solo method. After the talk a demonstration and chance to try your hand at some printmaking techniques.

Opening of IT’S VIRTUE IS IMMENSE: A Pre-Vinylite Society Tribute to Script Lettering @Lot...

TONIGHT the cool and the curious will be filing in and out of this sick spot from 7-11pm, with DJ Alanzi there to keep your head nodding. If you haven’t been to a Lot F Gallery opening before…buckle up and enjoy yourself!
This show is a tribute to the fading face of penmanship… As cursive faces possible extinction in our depressingly digital world LOT F GALLERY, MEREDITH KASABIAN (of Boston beautifiers BEST DRESSED SIGNS) and the PRE-VINYLITE SOCIETY are celebrating work by 20 of the best sign painters from around the world. Historically, beautiful penmanship has been an indicator of virtue and civility, but aesthetics aside, the art of hand lettering continues to communicate more than just words.
