April Guide to FREE Wednesdays @MFA

Every Wednesday after 4pm the Museum of Fine Arts lets all us penniless people in side for FREE and there just so happens to be some sick talks, tours and happenings coinciding each week.  This month welcomes their drool-inducing new special event series: Spring into Color at the MFA which is chock full of engrossing exhibits and events which will be running through 6/25.

Here’s your guide to a FREE aesthetic education at the MFA this April.

\ Wednesday, 4/2 //

5:30-8:30 ARTIST TOOLBOX CART: Furniture Design is a chance to better understand the art of furniture design by learning about and handling the tools and materials used to create beautiful, functional furnishings.

6, 6:30 & 7:15pm SPOTLIGHT TALK: Seeing Color: The Colors of Sunset A fifteen minute talk from MFA staff discussing the technique and history of colorful sunsets within pieces from the museum’s collection.  Also part of the orgasmic Spring into Color at the MFA series.

6-7pm GALLERY TALK: Highlights of the Musical Instrument Collection MFA curator Darcy Kuronen will talk you through the history and design of some instruments from around the world and even play you some notes to demonstrate.  Instruments include the harpsichord, clavichord, pianoforte, reed organ, zithers, early mouth organs, flageolet flutes and musical glasses.  Sick.

6-9pm Drawing in the Galleries If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at sketching, EVERY WEEK the MFA is providing you with the tools, the space, a subject and even an instructor to give it a shot!  Live (clothed) models or a museum object will be provided as your subject.  This is open to amateurs and pros alike.  Seriously, you’ve got nothing to lose here!

6:15pm GALLERY TOUR: Highlights of the Museum Collections Head to the Sharf Visitor Center and take an hourlong walkthrough of the MFA’s favorites works.

5:30-8:30 ARTIST TOOLBOX CART: Painting Allow some of the knowledgable staff to show you brushes, tools and materials used by artists to create some of the paintings on view throughout the museum.

6, 6:30 & 7:15pm SPOTLIGHT TALK: Seeing Color: Rosso’s Russet and Coral Ann Bible will give you a 15 minute rundown of 16th Century artist Rosso Fiorentino’s bold and unusual use of color. Also part of the Spring into Color at the MFA series.

6-7pm GALLERY TALK: Black & White in the Season of Color This talk given by Alfond Curator of Education, Barbara Martin as part of their new series Spring into Color.  This talk explores the impact and symbolism of Black & White throughout time and mediums of art.

6-9pm Drawing in the Galleries If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at sketching, EVERY WEEK the MFA is providing you with the tools, the space, a subject and even an instructor to give it a shot!  Live (clothed) models or a museum object will be provided as your subject.  This is open to amateurs and pros alike.  Seriously, you’ve got nothing to lose here!

5:30-8pm ARTIST DEMONSTRATION: Quilt Making with Anne Gallo and Susan Raban Let these two quilt making experts show you the How To’s of this underrated form of art, using geometric shapes and sewing techniques to keep you warm in style.  While you’re there, check out the Quilts and Color exhibit at the Gund Gallery! Also part of the Spring into Color at the MFA series.

5:30-8:30 ARTIST TOOLBOX CART: Furniture Design is a your second chance to better understand the art of furniture design by learning about and handling the tools and materials used to create beautiful, functional furnishings.

5:30-8:30 ARTIST TOOLBOX CART: Marble Sculpture will give you some insight into the tools used to turn marble into…well, anything.  If sculpture has always intrigued you, this is a great opportunity to see what the reality of the art form.

6, 6:30 & 7:15pm SPOTLIGHT TALK: Seeing Color: Exploring Bridget Riley’s “Song of Orpheus 5” Tori Reimann gives you a rundown on this 1978 series of paintings which used color and curves to create a new effect.  Pretty trippy stuff. Also part of the Spring into Color at the MFA series.

6-7pm GALLERY TALK: The Thing We Carry: Objects We Carry Take a tour of this exhibit which is part of the SMFA “Students Curate Students” exhibition.  The walk through will be lead by SMFA curator Joanna Soltan and grad students Renee M. Browne and Lydia Harris.

6, 6:30 & 7:15pm SPOTLIGHT TALK: Seeing Color: The Color of 17th Century Dutch Light Lana Sloutsky gives a 15 minute talk on the Golden Age of painting in Holland and it’s depiction of light during the Baroque period. Also part of the Spring into Color at the MFA series.

6-7pm GALLERY TALK: Death, Not Taxes: (Im)mortals in the Ancient World Guest lecturer Christopher Gilbert discusses ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome’s cultural beliefs in man’s immortality as reflected in their artwork.  Crazy interesting!

5:30-8:30pm ARTIST TOOLBOX CART: Marble Sculpture will give you some insight into the tools used to turn marble into…well, almost anything.  If sculpture has always intrigued you, this is a great opportunity to see what the reality of the art form is.

6, 6:30 & 7:15pm SPOTLIGHT TALK: Seeing Color: A Symbolist Rose Take 15 minutes to allow Ann Bible to take a closer look at role of the rose as another installment of the Spring Into Color at the MFA series.
