(9/26 + 9/27) WAYNE’S WORLD (1992) DIR. PENELOPE SPHEERIS @ COOLIDGE

by

I grew up one town over from Aurora, Illinois. It’s the kind of town where you could picture your wildest dreams coming true if you lived there in the 1950s and you still believed in the American Dream. These days Aurora, City of Lights, is frankly a total dump (except for anything right on Route 59 and that barely counts) and is best known for having a gross riverboat casino. But in 1992 for a brief, fleeting moment obscured by VHS tracking lines Aurora really felt like a place where anything was possible once again. 1992’s Wayne’s World (dir. Penelope Spheeris), based on the classic Saturday Night Live skit, taught us that even basement-dwelling metalheads living in third-rate Chicago suburbs could be TV stars. Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) are moronic, music-loving slackers with a popular Friday night show on Aurora public access that gets picked up by slimeball TV executive Benjamin Kane (Rob Lowe). As their fame skyrockets Wayne meets ultra babe Cassandra (Tia Carrere), but Benjamin wants her and total control over the new show. Can Wayne schwing into action to save the show and get the girl, all the while staying friends with Garth? Party on, dudes, all the way down to the inimitable Coolidge Corner Theater for a midnight screening this Friday (9/26) and Saturday (9/27) to find out. Wayne’s World? Wayne’s World. Party time? Excellent.
