When Royal Baths stepped into Boston this past fall they filled a void that I didn’t even know existed. Don’t get me wrong, we have plenty of twisted and tortured souls expanding our musical minds on a regular basis, but most of them make experimental noise or punk raucous. Not enough are going for a groovy psych pop thing. The Baths are a much more furious and psychotic live band than their first record suggests (although I wore it out). On Better Luck Next Life, their second full length that came out earlier this month, they really take it to the next level. It’s got that bleak but nasty garage bounce they can apparently pull off in their sleep but now their psycho lead guitarist is unleashed like he ought to be. Dude jabs a slide in a variety of clever and threatening ways, like a prison inmate let loose with a broken bottle, just let him through cause he’ll do whatever it takes to get ya. Somehow they even increased the effectiveness of their ghostly harmonies, somehow the two are whispering in your ear and screaming in your face at the same time. It’s dark rock and roll that is so cool it’s almost scary. The tunes are haunting and catchy, always droning on long enough to get you off, or push you off the edge. Indeed, watching them play back to back with Quilt at Homegrown 3 was like facing heaven or hell but being able to have them both. Listeners, don’t get flustered by the utterly evil vibes these guys are throwing at you, the real message is in the groove. Life’s fucked, live it up.
