(3/21 & 3/22) TRUE ROMANCE (1993) DIR. TONY SCOTT @COOLIDGE

by

It’s easy to see how the jigsaw elements of entertainment fall right into place once you sit down to watch this film. TRUE ROMANCE (1993) balances Quentin Tarantino’s adrenaline-laced writing with Tony Scott’s linear directing. It is a little unfortunate that in this example, the writer’s reputation overcasts the director, as both roles seamlessly harmonize in a delicate partnership responsible for this dirty drug thriller that bears unorthodox romance on its sleeve. Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette are front and center as our kung-fu-film-crossed lovers, which is equally as important as Gary Oldman portraying a dread-locked pimp (his interaction with Slater in a setting that seems to be the precursor of ‘90s hip hop videos), young Brad Pitt running free with any roles before FIGHT CLUB, and Samuel L. Jackson sharing his first historical collaboration with Tarantino. The film promises an end-of-the-day whiff of enthusiasm perfumed over the cockiness in lovers and the criminal sass in drug dealers.
