Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert connect for a veritable one-two punch of old-fashioned Hollywood starpower in this celebrated, much-decorated Frank Capra vehicle, which nabbed an at-the-time unheard of — and only twice since repeated — sweep of the “big five” Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Gable plays a journalist who faces an early end to his career before he happens upon Colbert, a poor-little-rich-girl on the run from her VIP father, a reasonable man determined to foil her marriage to a no-good-lout of a gold-digging fiancé. Knowing a good story when he hears it, Gable decides to stick close to her and take notes along the way. From here a predictable romantic comedy arc propels our principles from their initial mutual irritation through a minefield of zany misadventures before delivering them to the promised land of really, truly, truly real love. Predictable, sure, but cleverly written, brilliantly played, and plenty big fun. Come down to the Coolidge tonight and enjoy a pre-IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE slice of prime Capra caprice.
