(11/7) INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (2013) DIR. JOEL & ETHAN COEN @BRATTLE

by

Already having won the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival this year, the Coen Brothers have what looks to be another great addition to their catalogue of American Films. They are arguably the best American Film makers of the past 20 years and I mean that in the truest sense. Their filmography reads like a history book as they have made films set in so many parts of the United States and have explored several different periods in time . With INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, the Coen Brothers take us to New York in the 1960’s to take a look at the folk music scene. As any O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? fan will know, the Coens certainly handle music very well. It has always been a defining element in their films, outside of work like NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, which expertly used the natural soundscape to build tension.

This film follows Oscar Isaac’s titular character through a week in his life as he struggles to make it as a musician in New York. In classic Coen form, plenty of obstacles get in his way, money is a focal point, and there will be plenty of great songs that will help sell many copies of the soundtrack. The film also stars John Goodman, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, and Garret Hedlund.

If all of this doesn’t sound good enough, the Brattle Theater is having a free screening and Oscar Isaac will be there in person for a Q&A after the film. You can download your free pass at the Brattle web site linked below. Get there early as I’m sure there will be plenty of folks waiting in line.
