Hello Experimenters!
You might notice a strong theme running through the readings this week. February 18th was Toni Morrison’s birthday. When I think about the many artists who have shaped my approach to work and teaching, I consider Morrison my North Star. I know I’m not alone, unique, or original for feeling that way. Toni Morrison shaped generations of people with her work
On a more personal note, her birthday is the same as my paternal grandmother–another figure key to my worldview, artistic practice, and teaching methods. My grandmother, Nanny, always encouraged my creativity and intellectual curiosity. She was the first person to encourage me to paint with nail polish. It belonged to my aunt, and we didn’t ask first–which I guess means she also taught me how important stealing can be to one’s practice. I feel her absence sharply every day four years removed from her death, and nearly three years removed from Toni Morrison’s exit I feel her presence as strong as ever in every book, every lesson, and every newsletter.
