As Pride Month comes to an end, you may have a bit of a hangover thudding against your skull. Luckily, She’s the He is the perfect remedy, a charming, invigorating coming-of-age comedy about an anything-but-normal trans experience. There’s plenty of zaniness to disguise what ends up being a very emotional tale of self-acceptance, anchored by talented young performers Misha Osherovich and Nico Carney. This is the rare coming out movie that feels like it’s for an audience as young as its leads, not just the older queer people watching and reminiscing.
Siobhan McCarthy’s riff on She’s the Man (obviously!) and Some Like It Hot starts with our two leads lamenting their virgin status as their high school days come to an end. Instead of keeping their heads down and powering through, Alex (Carney) has a wild idea – why not pretend to be trans women and score some social points? Ethan (Osherovich) needs some cajoling, but eventually gives in. The friends debut as newly out trans girls, getting in good with the other girls. While Alex is working overtime to keep up the ruse, Ethan is finding herself more and more at ease in her body. Could she be… actually trans? What would that mean for her and her mother Mary (Suzanne Cryer)?
We’re deep into Trump 2 at this point, with many (or most!) protective laws for trans people under attack. A film like this, presenting transition as something not only normal, but completely achievable, has unfortunately become quite radical. Ethan’s story of accepting her trans identity is a rare thing in cinema, even rarer in a movie that’s genuinely fun and entertaining. She’s the He is a no-brainer addition to your Pride watchlist, especially if you’re into a ‘90s throwback with screwball energy.
