LISTEN TO: THE AXEMEN

by

Continuing on a New Zealand kick it’s time to
get into a little bit of the AXEMEN. Shambolic scruffy,
though thoughtful bastards from that far away land, the AXEMEN
combined  elements of power pop, noise, and punk together
in a lo-fi stew of what would eventually become
indie rock. SILTBREEZE has been rereleasing their

records, 80s & early 90s angry fuzz slabs full of protest songs
against sexism and the like. 1984’s BIG CHEAP MOTEL

is full of wandering guitars and sputtered vocals.

Saxaphones show up here and there, as on the track
“Big Fat M” slthering behind the rant and drunk beat.
“Angel Must Be A Centerfold” all out of tune, never
stopping, just rolling on comes across on a Desperate
Bicycles vibe. “Big Cheap Motel” lays out classic
inept post-punk grooving sounding like it could have
been written and performed last week by some kids in
some basement somewhere(and no doubt some kids in a
basement somewhere were churning out something
approximating this within the last few weeks). To
make local comparisons think Kid Romance here. There’s more

live recordings and bits of keyboard led jams to be found

elsewhere on this thing, but why not listen to it yourself

and buy some of these weirdo’s records from SILTBREEZE?
