Members of Australia’s UV Race have been recording grinding drum and guitar riffs as Eastlink for a couple years now, but this year the side project is attracting wider release and exposure. A few months ago Aarght pressed a 7” of two remastered songs from a 2011 cassette. Here is “Dinnerchat”, the single off of (rumored) forthcoming LP Mullum Mullum from In the Red.

As with other Eastlink songs, a small motive repeats while (several) other guitars explore texturally within and around it. This one’s a grower, starting with a strange loop of birthday blowers and incidental background noise before the multiple guitar attack kicks in. There’s a feedback drone, slashed-cone distortion crackle, and a clean 60s arpeggio holding it all down, zoned-out ringing building to a throttled climax.

It’s relaxing really, in an “I’m-gonna-draw-a-bath-and-drown-in-it” way: like these songs, we are locked in endless repetition despite any screaming or clawing attempts to break free! Mullum Mullum will take us farther down the rabbit hole, so keep an ear out in the coming months.
