8 Binge-Worthy Amazon Prime Picks

What to Watch This Week

by

If you’re like me, you’re probably detoxing after eating approximately one pound of candy corn last week. If you’re not a candy corn fan (unfortunate for you), you’re probably still detoxing from an overload of candy and Halloween festivities. What better opportunity to stay in and watch movies? While none of these picks are scary – unless you consider the mortifying ordeal of being a teenager scary, like I do – they are some of my favorite movies that are free on Amazon Prime.

If you’re having a hard time choosing what to watch this week, I did the work for you:

1.

What We Do In the Shadows
2014
dir. Taika Watiti, Jemaine Clement
87 min.

This New Zealand-based mockumentary about vampire roommates is the funniest thing you’ll watch this year.

2.

The Virgin Suicides
2000
dir. Sofia Coppola
97 min.

A soft, nostalgic film that proves teenage girls are misunderstood by everyone.

3.

Never on Sunday
dir. Jules Dassin
1960
97 min.

Take a foray into classic Greek cinema with the queen herself, Melina Mercouri.

4.

Big Night
1996
dir. Stanley Tucci, Campbell Scott
109 min.

A celebration of food, brotherhood, fighting for the American dream, and Stanley Tucci (with hair). (Also screens Monday, 11/4 @ Coolidge! –ed.)

5.

The Favourite
2018
dir. Yorgos Lanthimos
121 min.

Will you accept Olivia Colman as your queen and savior? You should.

6.

Eighth Grade
dir. Bo Burnham
2018
94 min.

Such a beautiful, accurate coming-of-age that it’s almost too painful to watch, but it’s worth it.

7.

Gloria Bell
dir. Sebastián Lelio
2019
102 min.

Gloria Bell embraces her life by dancing her way through it — even the most difficult parts — with fervor.

8.

Wristcutters: A Love Story
2006
dir. Goran Dukić
91 min.

A dark comedy in which Tom Waits plays a mystical commune leader. Isn’t that enough?
