Went There

Went There: The Coathangers, Big Bite (canceled), Downhaul @ Great Scott 4/15/19

Ladies playing rock n roll: what could be better than that. This show was all about that! Local rockers, The Downhauls, kick things off with a bunch of punk tunes recalling the sounds of Joan Jett and The Distillers. They played mostly their own songs plus a punk cover of ‘In Your Eyes’ which certainly sounded quite unlike the original.

The Coathangers started different than usual. Their first song was this really slow mellow song with Julia crooning over birds chirping. This is actually the final track, ‘Lithium’ from the band’s brand new album The Devil You Know where the girls continue to evolve their simplistic sound. In their last few albums they’ve gone from sounding like girls to sounding like women. The other songs were more what they’re known for simple fast rock/punk songs.

Meredith is originally from this area and her family tends to come to their shows. I love seeing her mom rock out in the crowd. They are just great and I’m so glad they were able to make it back to Boston. There was supposed to be a third band on the bill, Big Bite, but they were unable to make it.
