Over in Jamaica Plain several weeks back I attended a very cool B.O.W. Shows joint that brought together experimental sax king of Boston, STEVE NORTON, with his friend and at times collaborator LUCIO MENAGON (NYC). The duo have no recordings that I know of, so having only checked out what was apparently their first performance together (via a soundcloud clip that the two didn’t know existed when  asked them about it) I was expecting some kind of raging inferno of HEATHEN SHAME-ian or FUSHITSUSHA-ian squall that could bring a full blown battle tank to its knees (if it had knees, and also, what the fuck is a full blown battle tank???!!!). I didn’t not get that, as my ears were in danger of being blown to smithereens @ moments, but LMNo!’s set as a whole was a much deeper, and nuanced affair.

Both members wielded their main instruments with force and gravity (MENAGON slinging a six string), but beyond that they both often turned to piles of electronics during their set, deepening the rabbit hole which they tumbled down and asking us the audience to follow. Later in the set things bubbled over into a post-punk meltdown, a screeching start stop freak out, perhaps inspired by their bill mates for that evening FUTURE SPA and KTB, or by the recent news of the passing of Tommy Ramone. Two bald men making very exciting music. Check Steve Norton or Lucio Menagon out when they do whatever it is that they will do next!!! And hopefully we’ll get to hear what this duo has to say again before too long.
