Went There

PRIESTS, SKIMASK, ANIMAL MOTHER, URSULA, WHIP APPEAL @ BOYLSTON CHURCH JP

by

Sunday night at the old BOYLSTON CHURCH in Jamaica Plain, a relatively new show locale the Boston Hassle bookers have burrowed their way into. I was very excited for this fantastic lineup. Unfortunately I had misread the time and missed WHIP APPEAL, which was a bummer because members Dan Lawrence and James Coarse are cool as hell. I did catch new Allston duo URSULA though. Featuring Sonam of Fast Apple booking on drums and Catie O’Hear on vocals and a distraught and distored guitar, Ursula was all attitude and rapid-fire tempo changes – something I always really dig. ANIMAL MOTHER played next; they got some crazy energy going. They riled up the punks enough to get the pits going. Then comes the main touring attraction: DC’s PRIESTS, who completely lived up to (and overshot) their frenzied hype. High energy rock making actual, powerful statements about entrenched power structures – we need more bands like this. SKIMASK closed up shop that night. God bless me they are not camera friendly, so I got to get into the savage pits they opened up to the infamous group’s driving thrash sound. I feel bad for you if you missed this one.
