Various Suspects (V/A) — MPLS MMXIV Minneapolis Noise Circa 2014

by

A heavy and most bogus dip into the unknowably deep, dank waters of the Minneapolis noise, experimental-electronic, etc., world. The sounds here get down near a disgusting low (“Breathing In Vapors” by the BERMUDA BAND), squelch quite vibrantly (“Juicy Dugard” by noise mainstays COCK E.S.P.), shimmer only to explode into a writhing industrial mess (“Water Me (FKA Twigs)” from INDIAN BURIAL GROUND), and confuse their way straight into a fountain of static (“Yes Sir, I Will” from STRAIGHT PANIC). And don’t forget the weirdness in song form that is BOOB DYLAN’s “Short Rash,” and the straight electronic bombast of KINDOHM’s “Maker’s Bonds.”

All in all, this triple-cassette comp (yes!) boasts 29 bands brought together by queer noise veteran Thomas Boettner (ANCHORAGE, AK/STRAIGHT PANIC) for his own FUCK MOUNTAIN label. I read a Boettner quote likening noise to “the queering of music.” I like that a lot. You can do no better than this comp if your aim is to get weird with the people of Minneapolis, or Minnesota for that matter. Totally recommended.
